On top of apricot, brown sugar and maple syrup, this Vin Santo offers unique complexity with aniseed, beeswax and toasted cardamom pod. The mouthfeel is equally finessed with a soft texture and, surprise, a wonderful dose of freshness. That acidity is the wine's ace card. This 2010 Isole e Olena Vin Santo is a delightful example of Vin Santo or Holy Wine. This is the famous Tuscan sweet, amber-colored wine that is made from dried grapes. Traditionally every producer made one and Paolo de Marchi makes one of the best. The 2010 has a bright amber, orange-gold color, on the nose it is headily complex and fragrant with orange zest, honey, nut and toffee notes. There is a lovely purity, clarity and intensity of both flavors and aromas. On the palate there is a beautiful balance between sweetness, tangy freshness and savory, bitter-orange flavors.
