Franck Bonville Grand Cru Blanc de Blancs Brut
As demand for the greatest Côtes des Blancs grand crus continues to spiral, the privilege of substantial, well-placed holdings cannot be overstated. Gilles and Ingrid Bonville and their son Olivier are in command of 20 glorious hectares of prime grand cru turf, largely in Avize, with old vines on the slope of Oger and a little in Le Mesnil-sur-Oger and Cramant. Tended and vinified with precision, their polished blanc de blancs contrast the tension and brilliance of Avize with the generosity and exoticism of Oger.
100% chardonnay; 70% Avize and 30% Oger; 30% 2015 reserves and a little 2009 from barrels; 9.17g/L dosage
A beautiful expression of the tension and precision of Avize, bolstered with the generosity and exoticism of Oger. Apple, grapefruit, lemon and fragrant pink lady apple lead out, with lees age and a touch of barrel-fermented reserves contributing notes of nougat and vanilla that soften and build the finish. A cuvée of body and presence, marked with slightly firm phenolic texture on the finish. Dosage is adjusted each year to maintain consistency of the style, usually 6–7g/L, making 9.17g/L quite high, rounding out its phenolic grip. Tyson Stelzer
