Vignerons Schmölzer & Brown 'Obstgarten - Riesling Selection'
Our second vintage of this late harvest style Riesling, with a touch of botrytis and 35g/ L residual sugar, superb natural acidity and 10% alcohol. Clean, bright and refreshing with notes of citrus and stone fruit. Winemakers Note
VS&B do a strong job with riesling, indeed, they sit comfortably, in a shortish spell, in the upper echelon of riesling producers in Australia, for mine. Here’s one made with about 2-3% raisined and botrytised grapes and holding around 30 grams residual sugar.
This is textural and rich but brings bright acidity to the party. It has scents of honey, truffle, ripe citrus, mandarin juice. The flavours roll lushly but find chalky edges and limey acidity to play with. Sweetness is a motif, but feels well judged. It’s one to savour here. Complex, generous, that marriage of many things savoury in things sweet in things fresh. Hard to not swallow, so do, as that’s the point. Super stuff. 95 points, Mike Bennie, The Wine Front
