Joh. Jos. Prüm ‘Wehlener Sonnenuhr’ Riesling Spätlese
The Wehlener Sonnenuhr vineyard is seldom one that reveals all of its charms early on in its evolution, for like the Doctor vineyard in Bernkastel, the Sonnenuhr hides many of its layers of complexity for the patient who give the wines proper bottle age. I have to assume that this is also true of the 2019 Spätlese from Weingut Prüm, but given how uncharacteristically expressive the wine is right out of the blocks on the nose, I can only imagine what lies ahead! The gorgeous bouquet offers up scents of apple, pear, fresh lime, honeycomb, vanilla bean, slate minerality, a touch of wild yeast, lavender and spring flowers. On the palate the wine is deep, precise and pure, with a medium-full and filigreed personality, a superb core, great acids and grip and a long, nascently complex and utterly refined finish. This has true Sonnenuhr reserve on the palate and will want some extended bottle age, but it is going to be magical juice! 96+ points, John Gilman
The 2019 Wehlener Sonnenuhr Spätlese is very clear and spicy on the concentrated, intensely aromatic and flinty/stony nose. Highly delicate and filigreed on the palate, this is a persistently salty and finely grippy Sonnenuhr Spätlese with great balance, finesse and mouthwatering astringency. Excellent. 95 points, Stephan Reinhardt, Robert Parkers’ The Wine Advocate
A cornucopia of yellow fruit, from peach through mirabelle to Amalfi lemon. Succulent and very elegant with a very precise balance of lively acidity and discreet sweetness, this is an extremely charming wine that caresses the palate through the long, almost dry and very stony finish. 96 points, Stuart Pigott, jamessuckling.com
