Giuseppe Mascarello 'Scudetto' Barbera d’Alba
From a significant plot at 300 metres above sea level in Monforte d’Alba. The wine hangs out in large format, Slovenian oak. Fancy barbera.
And fancy it feels, no doubt. Lavish spice, alpine herbs, rich cherry juice scents and flavours and a touch of lavender or similar floral character floating around. Quiet mouth-filling, soft, but a wave of light, fine tannin keeps things succulent and finely strung. Lots of generosity and impact but still a freshness. Superb balance in that respect. Feels complex, layered and intense. Impressive. 93 points, Mike Bennie, The Wine Front
