Description

A blend of Avize for structure and fruit, Chouilly for depth and salty chalk minerality, Cramant for florals and acidity, and Le Mesnil-sur-Oger for definition and structure; 33–40% reserves; vinified in stainless steel tanks; partial malolactic fermentation; DIAM
‘In your dreams,’ responded Jean Roland-Billecart when his son Antoine proposed a non-vintage blanc de blancs. ‘We don’t have sufficient quantity of chardonnay, but if you find the grapes to produce it, go ahead.’ And find them he did. Not just anywhere, but in the five grand crus of the Côte des Blancs, and in 1997 Billecart made its first non-vintage blanc de blancs.

Oh my, how Billecart’s Blanc de Blancs is back on form in the 2012 and 2013 vintages, after the challenges of 2011! The 2013 is an arresting rendition, a magnificent accord of white citrus, dainty white flowers and white stone fruits meeting the gentle pâtisserie, butter, vanilla and nougat of five years of maturity. It morphs seamlessly an enticing style at once focused, honed and refreshing and at the same time creamy, silky, soft and textural, energised by lively, energetic acidity and the brilliantly crystalline sparkle of salty grand cru minerality. It coasts unwavering and alluring, an impeccably crafted cuvée of pinpoint precision that embodies the captivating juxtaposition of refined elegance and characterful confidence that epitomises the modern Billecart. Outstanding.

The 2012 base enjoyed another year on lees to tone the high acidity of this great season, and to give the fruit time to express itself. A sensationally pure and beach-fresh expression of the Côte des Blancs grand crus, fantastically mineral and precise, with magnificent, frothing, heightened chalk powder texture perfectly integrating with a laser line of acidity. It captures its Avize core with exacting precision and desperate purity as radiant as high-noon daylight.
